Pretty Little Liars: Reading Into The Liars' Style

By Victoria Robertson on June 19, 2015

For most of us, “Pretty Little Liars” is a guilty pleasure show. Sure there’s always something going on, and the guys are extremely attractive, but don’t lie: you pause the TV every time someone walks into the room due to sheer embarrassment that you are as addicted to PLL as you are.

But hey, you love it and there’s nothing that’s going to change that. So rather than dissing on a show that’s entertaining, but mediocre at best, let’s focus on one of the things that’s done really well: fashion.

The true PLL fans know what a big part fashion plays in the series, and how each character’s distinct style evolves with each character as the series unfolds.

So without further ado, here is a style breakdown of the main PLL characters and what that’s saying about their quest to answer the question that’s miraculously been dragged out through 6 seasons: who the heck is “A”?

Aria:

Aria’s style is one of my favorites to follow, as she’s the most daring: both in terms of fashion and in love. In season one, Aria takes center stage as her fling with Mr. Fitz, her high school teacher, and her fashion make her the most eye-catching Liar.

As we begin the sixth season, Aria is back to her old fashion … literally. The season starts with Aria’s escape from “the dollhouse” and her return to reality. This dark transition is marked through her subtle use of black, implemented into her patterned look, something we’ve seen since season 1.

So while Aria may be dealing with some skeletons this season, her style is coming full-circle, so maybe that means she’ll be back with Fitz by the time it’s all over. I mean, they can’t stay broken up forever, right?

Spencer:

Season 1 Spencer is preppy, driven and completely focused on her studies. The most important thing to Spencer revolves around academics, and her fashion in the first season mirrors this drive. Her style is preppy, conservative and tastefully colorful and her love for cardigans and blazers is visible throughout the season.

Season 6 Spencer is a bit more relaxed, both in her style and in her personal life, but that’s not saying too much. The ever-anxious character has toned it back a bit (a gray, tie-front dress revealing of her bleak outlook on life) and we see her style actually regressing from her previous self.

This season, we can expect to see a lot more breakdowns from Spencer, especially with her continuously stressed relationship with Toby and her inability to shake her need for anti-anxiety medications.

Emily:

Emily’s season 1 style is best described as innocent, casual and probably the most normal of the four main characters. Her simple accessories and tasteful outfits show her reservations, or, more specifically, her concealed identity.

In season 6, Emily knows exactly who she is, and her style shows it. Her relaxed, tomboy look works well for her, and she is completely comfortable with who she is at this point. Her toils aren’t masked anymore and she reads more like an open book now than anyone else at this point.

Emily has always worn her heart on her sleeve, and I think you can expect a whole lot more of that as this season continues. But just a reminder, that isn’t always a good thing – especially when you’re too trusting of someone you shouldn’t be *cough* Sara *cough.*

Hanna:

Hanna is one of the most fun Liars to follow fashion-wise, especially with her constant changes. Hefty Hanna became Glamma Hanna, as she spent a majority of season 1 in flashy outfits to mirror her new friendships, look and personality.

Season 6 begun much differently, as Hanna’s learned how being in the spotlight isn’t everything. Hanna mellows out her style but still keeps that extra oomph with soft pastels matched with fun patterns and textures. She doesn’t want the spotlight anymore, and she’s ready to blend, no matter what that takes.

We can expect a much more mellow Hanna as she works to move forward, against “A’s” best wishes. We all know what happens when someone works against “A’s” plan, but we’ll see.

This season of PLL has started out fantastic: there’s still drama, there’s still A and there’s still hot guys and beautiful clothes. What more can a fashionista ask for?

Tune in Tuesdays at 8/7c for more “Pretty Little Liars.”
