This week on the quad, members of She’s the First, the UIUC chapter, will be holding a tie-dye cupcake bake off.

The bake off is part of the Bake A Change Campaign and every dollar earned is a dollar donated.

The members of the She’s the First organization on this campus are a part of a national organization based out of New York. Their goal is to raise money to help girls in developing countries to make it through school and become the first in their family to do such. The She’s the First organization is nonprofit and is working with girls in ten different developing countries all over the world.

According to their profile, they work in countries where female students only make up one third of the student body and where they receive “a little over a penny of every developing dollar” in support of their education.

The organization is currently supporting a young girl named Milsa. She is a 16-year-old from Guatemala that lives with her four siblings and her parents; she has an amazing story you can read about here. She helps care for her family from the moment she wakes up until the moment she goes to bed. Milsa works daily selling the goods her mother makes and does her homework in the spare time she has between work and class.

The organization sponsored bake off will be occurring every day through Friday from 11 am until 5 pm on the University of Illinois quad. They will be selling cupcakes as well as puppy chow at their booth. If you are unable to make it to the event, it is possible to donate through their tinygive.
