10 Great Rainy Day Activities

By Elana Goodwin on October 27, 2014

Rain, rain, don’t go away. Why? Because a wet, gloomy day is the perfect time to do some of these great rainy day activities you otherwise might not get around to doing (until maybe, say, the weekend).

Movie Marathon. When it’s gross out, having a movie marathon is a perfect way to spend the day. Even if it’s the middle of the day, you can get into your favorite PJs, make some popcorn, and cue up the first movie of the day.

You can do a Disney marathon, a franchise marathon, a Channing Tatum — er, whatever actor you choose — movie marathon: the possibilities are endless. Plus, you won’t feel guilty spending the day inside and doing nothing because it’s so dreary outside and you’ve got time to spare.

Read A Book. Whether you choose to curl up with a favorite, classic, or new release, reading a book can be a great rainy day activity. You can stay in bed, lay on the couch, or set up a comfy space on the floor and get lost in a good book and just read your rainy day away.

If you want, you can even choose to read a book that was made into a movie and read the novel before sitting back and watching it on screen.

Take A Nap. A recent study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that not getting enough sleep can have around the same impact on a student’s GPA as binge drinking or marijuana use.

Another study found that around 68 percent of the 1,125 college students surveyed indicated worries about school and life keep them awake, with 1/5 stating this occurs at least once a week. Less than 1/3 of those surveyed are getting the eight hours of sleep college-aged people need.

So on a rainy day when you just want to stay inside and chill, take a disco nap — that way when you wake up later, you’ll feel refreshed and rejuvenated and can spend the rest of your rainy day doing something else.

TV Time. A rainy day is a great time to catch up on TV shows from the last week that you haven’t had a chance to see or to do some binge-watching. Pick a series you’ve never seen before or an old favorite and just spend your rainy day inside the TV show of your choice.

Binge-watching suggestions: “Law and Order: SVU,” “Breaking Bad,” “Gilmore Girls,” and “The Mindy Project.”

Get Caught Up On Current Events. With so much going on in the world, it can be hard to keep up with current events.

So engage in an educational rainy day activity and get caught up on the ins and outs of the Ebola virus, the constitutionality of gay marriage, the uproar over Renee Zellweger’s new look, or whatever other trending topics interest you.

Edit Photography. Have some pictures you’ve been meaning to go through and edit? A rainy day is the perfect time to upload those photos to your computer, browse through them, and play around with effects and filters to make your pics even better.

Plus, once you’re done editing, you can put them up on Facebook and Instagram for your friends and family to enjoy.

Do Some Online Shopping. As a busy and broke college student, you may not have the time or money to go shopping. But that doesn’t mean browsing online will hurt.

Online shopping (even if it’s really just window shopping) can be a fun rainy day activity, and you just might find some good deals that turn your window shopping into real shopping.

And really, Christmas and Hanukkah aren’t that far away.

Get Lost On YouTube. If you don’t feel like watching a full-length movie or TV show, watching YouTube clips can be an entertaining rainy day activity.

Check out song covers, comedy bits, movie trailers, and other fun clips, and spend your rainy day lost on YouTube.

Talk With Friends. A rainy day is a great time to catch up with people from high school, talk to friends studying abroad, or finally have that Skype session you’ve been meaning to have with your sibling.

Whether you choose to talk with friends online, on the phone, or face to face, a rainy day can give you the time you need to catch up with the important people in your life.

Do Homework. I know, it’s a novel idea. But a rainy day is good time to get up to date on assigned readings and homework, or to get started on that term paper or studying for an upcoming test.

So the next time you have a rainy day and don’t want to go outdoors, spend your day doing one of these rainy day activities — you won’t even notice the gloominess outside because you’ll be so busy inside.
